Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters are an interior design statement, and can completely transform the look of your home from ordinary to extraordinary. However, there are a few things you need to consider before making your final decision. Our range of Santa Fe Shutters are handcrafted to your exact spec, available in a range of materials & colours.

Style & Doors

The style of your shutter completely depends on what you’d like it to do and the size of the window.

The most popular style is undoubtedly the full height shutter. It gives a classic look, with full privacy when required and an easy to use system. If you’re looking to use one section of the door separately, tier-on-tier style allows you to do so, meaning you can let a lot of light into the room using the top or bottom of your shutters. Alternatively, a mid-rail will allow separate use of the louvres or slats, whilst retaining a single full height shutter door.

Cafe style has a similar effect but in a more permanent state. The height of the shutter is up to you, but the rest of the window remains bare. The purpose of this style is to have a constant stream of light coming over the top half of the room, whilst the bottom half can continue to protect your privacy. This looks especially effective on windows that have stained glass on the top sections, as this will not be covered.

The number of doors or panels you choose to go for may be influenced by our surveyors advice. The size of the window will dictate the minimum/maximum number of doors you can have. The location of window frames may also play a part in where you decide to split your shutter for the best finish visually. A divider rail can be used to separate the louvre control in one full height door. This works in a similar way to the tier-on-tier, apart from it’s only the louvres that are controlled separately, not the whole door.

Ranges

When it comes to which range to pick, by far the favourite choice is either Nevada PVC or Hampton PVC. Manufactured from high quality HS Polyvinyl, these ranges are ideal for bathrooms & kitchens, and will absolutely stand the test of time. If you’re looking for perhaps a colour (rather than white or cream), our Dakota MDF & Madison Hardwood are your best bet. They have 34 colourways between them, including wood grains & anthracite grey.

Tilt Rods & Louvre Size

Another thing to consider is the louvre size you’d like. The sizes are available in 47mm, 64mm, 89mm & 114mm. This will contribute to the amount of light you’d like to let in when they are tilted open. The wider the slat width, the more light will come through. Bigger slat widths tend to look better on larger windows, but they all look stunning with all of the styles mentioned above.

The tilt rods are the control bars that sit in the middle of each panel, used to tilt the slats open and closed. This can be on show, or you could choose a hidden tilt rod which is situated behind the louvres. These are controlled by manually moving one of the louvres. This will give a more transparent look when the louvres are open, as nothing will be obstructing the view.

Colour

When choosing the colour, there are various shades of white, cream, grey & black as well wooden shades. We usually advise to choose something that will go with any decor and stand the test of time. Shutters are an investment in your home, much like new flooring. However, you can also opt for custom colour with our Madison hardwood range, which means you can colour match anything you like – a cushion cover, wallpaper or any standard RAL colour.
